#SAVE-THE-YOUNG# PROJECT

Poverty has been a serious challenge to governments in Nigeria. Its effect, which includes lack and deprivation in the basic necessities of life, is worrisome. Poverty humiliates and dehumanizes its victim. Poverty itself is as old as the whole world. One of the Holy Scriptures even stated that “the poor shall never seize in your midst” (Holy Bible). To this end government and people in authority almost always strive to ensure that adequate structural programmes are enshrined to see that poverty if not eradicated, is reduced to the barest minimum. “Poverty has earned recognition in the extent of its ravaging society and the affairs of humanity at the international, national and local levels, the need exists now for urgent actions towards its eradication and control. Indeed, poverty is a snare. It is dehumanizing and it must be eradicated. The causes of this state of poverty in the country may be traced to the under-listed, among other factors:
• Corruption
• Bad governance
• Debt overhang
• Unemployment •
 Low productivity
 • Burgeoning population growth
 • Globalisation
 • Unfocused government policies
• Lack of effective skills training

In a bid to overcome poverty of Nigeria, government has initiated different policies and structural programmes between 1977 till date. These programmes include:
·         Directorate of Food, Roads and Rural Infrastructure (DFFRI)
·         Better Life Programme (BLP)
·          National Directorate of Employment (NDE)
·          People’ Bank of Nigeria (PBN)
·          Community Bank (CB); Family Support Programme (FSP)
·          Family Economic Advancement Programme (FEAP)
·          Poverty Eradication Programme (PEP)
·          National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP)
·          National Economic Empowerment Development Strategy (NEEDS).
Their aims are to ameliorate the suffering of the people by providing them employment opportunities and access to credit facilities to enable them establish their own businesses.

So what can we do?

BEING A GOOD LEADER

The crisis and complicated issues across the globe are all traced to the influence of our leaders. LEADERSHIP IS NOT JUST A ROLE ONE PLAYS; IT IS A LIFE ONE LIVE AND LEADS.
True leadership has always been built on story character. The greatest obstacle to a leader’s success is a deficit of character. It is essential to teach and train the leaders the priority of character.
Imagine you owned a business and have been using a particular supplier for many years. Then, the supplier was exposed as having been repeatedly dishonest in his billing practices. Assuming he wasn’t put in jail would you continue to do business with him?
OR
Suppose you supported a particular friend but found out that he has been taking bribes for years, living a lavish lifestyle without you knowing will you continue to support him?
We can easily know the basic reason why leaders who have some weakness especially in CHARACTER lose the trust of their followers because of betrayal as well as the pain and anger it generate.
As a leader, you must ask yourself “AM I IN A WAY VIOLATING THE TRUST OF THOSE WHO HAVE PLACED THEIR HOPE IN ME”?
What impact am I having on those who are influenced or affected by my behaviour?. “Once you lose the trust of others, it is very difficult to win it back”
Truly, no one is perfect but a leader who desires to be strong and effective will summon the courage to identify and root out his weakness. Everyone have positive and negative character traits.
”Leadership is the capacity to influence others through inspiration motivated by a passion, generated by a vision, produced by a convention, ignited by a purpose”.
Everyone is a leader, where ever the position you are or you find yourself, you are a leader!! therefore, you need to possess a GOOD CHARACTER IN ALL YOUR SETTINGS.
